Hit Refresh For The New Year

Urgh, it's January again. The diet is on. The booze is shut away under lock and key. The trainers have been dug out and dusted down. It's all about healthy living and restraint.

It's not just my body that needs cleansing after Christmas though. Looking around the house, the clutter seems to have reached new heights. There may have been the intentions to give meaningful, necessary presents to each other but Santa (and many other relatives) didn't get that memo. Piles of plastic toys are spilling out of the toy box and cupboards. Wardrobes are bursting at the seams with clothes, shoes and bags, yet I never seem to have the right thing to wear. There seems to be stuff stuffed everywhere.

So, I'm starting this year right and I'm having a major reorganisation, installing practical storage solutions and having a good old clear out. I know it will provide a wonderful feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. I seem to do this every January and then one thing leads to another and I'll want to completely redecorate and refurnish. Then I remember that it's January, the month of restraint and frugality after the decadence of December.

The answer is a compromise. I'll leave the colour charts and wallpaper samples in the drawer for now. The sofas will have to make do with a spruce up rather than being replaced. But I think I can stretch to a few new pictures. Simply swapping around the framed photos and adding some fresh new prints to our collection will make a difference - the interior update that I'm looking for.

Embracing Autumn

You may have guessed from our artwork and previous blogs that we're summer people really. The feeling of the warm sun on your skin is hard to beat. The freedom of wearing flip flops is something to cherish. Our summer wardrobe is the one that makes us feel our very best.

However, there's no getting away from the fact that summer's gone and autumn is most definitely here. Flip flops and sunhats have been packed away for another year. It's time to pile on the layers, the chunky knits and woolly hats. But how to do it without sinking into an autumnal gloom as grey as the sky overhead?

Here are our 5 things to love about autumn:

1. Colours

Nature has a way of reminding us that it evolves constantly. The autumnal colour palette of reds, oranges, yellows and browns is one such reminder, and a beautiful one at that. Summer's lush green grass now has a newly-laid carpet of leaves. It's new season styling at its very best.

2. Crunch

And those fallen leaves provide the perfect opportunity for behaving like a small child. Like Peppa Pig's pull to a muddy puddle, jumping in a pile of crunchy leaves brings a big smile to your face - whatever your age. Kick them in the air. Jump on top of them. That seasonal crunch of leaves underfoot is so satisfying.

3. Cosy Fabrics

Putting on a super soft, comfy knit is like being enveloped in a warm hug. Snuggle up and enjoy the feeling.

4. Comfort Food

Apple pie, a slow-cooked stew, a hearty roast - tis the season to enjoy warming, comforting dishes with a side serve of nostalgia. Sausages by the bonfire anyone?

5. Christmas Is Coming

It does seem to come earlier every year, but once the first frost has passed it's ok to mention the C word. Soon sleigh bells will be ringing and reindeers will be in full flight. Try not to get stressed about it, and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year with childlike glee.

5 easy ways to keep the summer vibe alive

If, like us, you're not quite ready to give up on summer altogether and wrap up in cosy knits or hibernate, don't despair. It is possible to keep that summer vibe alive a little longer. Here are five easy ways to cling on to it.

1. Scents Of Adventure

Fragrance can be powerfully evocative. A whiff of jasmine, rose or peony can transport you back to days spent outside in the garden or relaxing on a sun lounger. For us, the tropical aroma of coconut screams summer and sun cream in particular. Mix in citrus notes of lime and mandarin and you could be miles away from home in an instant. Burn a candle, diffuse an essential oil or spritz a perfume with an unmissable summer scent to lift your spirits. Visit scentsofadventure.com.au for some of our favourite fragrances.

2. Pops Of Colour

Perk up your home with bright, vibrant accessories. A sunny picture or bold printed cushions can make a big difference. Whether it's a souvenir from a holiday destination or one with a summery hue, the right picture can make you smile as you fondly recall special holiday memories.

3. Book In Time

One of our favourite holiday pastimes is getting lost in a good book. Lying back and escaping into an addictive page-turner is such a simple pleasure. It doesn't have to end when you return home. Set aside some alone time to read and recharge. It may seem decadent when lives are so busy, but you'll reap the benefits.

4. A Picnic Tea

Who says that picnics should be restricted to summer weekends? Even if it's wet and windy outside, it can still be a picnic day. Spread out a rug in the lounge and put together a collection of transportable treats. Whether you favour traditional sandwiches, Scotch eggs and sausage rolls or mix it up with Middle Eastern kebabs, salads and dips, eating finger food on the floor is fun even if you're on carpet rather than sand.

5. Add Some Ice

Relaxing at the end of a day on the beach with something over ice is such a holiday ritual. This is one summer treat that can linger. We're not saying that every day should end with gin o'clock (although there are some that definitely should), but sitting down at the end of the day with a glass of something chilled is such a pleasure. Simply adding a slice of something citrusy to iced sparkling water can make your evening tipple feel special. And relax...

Welcome to Art of Adventure

What is Art of Adventure?

We have a passion for travel, exploration, the great outdoors and new experiences. We capture that feeling and love of places and activities in our artwork.

We love getting away from the everyday and discovering something new, be it a stunning beach, glorious countryside, a riverside ramble or the perfect place to catch a wave.

Adventure doesn’t have to mean backpacking around the world. We’ve had our share of that and we have the scars and memories to prove it. These days, our adventures tend to be more low key. For us, adventure is more of a way of life and a mindset. It means not being afraid to try something new. It could involve a flight to an exotic new destination, but it could also mean saying ‘yes’ to sampling a new dish with unusual ingredients or trying out a new activity that is way out of the comfort zone.

So this week, do something you haven’t done before. Visit that local farmers market or café That you’ve heard about. Take a drive to somewhere new. Be inspired to cook a new recipe that excites your taste buds. Walk a different route to work and see what hidden gems you discover. Challenge yourself to try a new activity, a book by a new author, an obscure film or even an old classic that you’ve never got round to watching.

The summer holidays may be over, but we plan to keep that feeling going. And that is our art of adventure.
